Visitors to Saratoga National Historical Park can see the battlefield along a 9-mile tour road with ten stops of interest. Hikers and bikers can access the road any time of the year from sunrise to sunset. Vehicles, on the other hand, can only access the road from April through November starting at 9 AM. Closing hours vary per season, ranging anywhere from 4 PM to 6 PM. The road is closed to vehicles from December through March due to possible snow and ice. See the National Park Service’s Operating Hours and Seasons web page for the current schedule.
A map of the tour is available on the park brochure, which you can get for free at the Visitor Center. While there, be sure to watch the park film and peruse the information in the exhibit area before heading out to explore the battlefield so that you understand what you are looking at.
There are wayside exhibits at most tour stops that provide information about the events that occurred there. For those who want to learn more about the battles that took place at Saratoga, the National Park Service has created a battlefield audio tour that you can listen to on your mobile device. To access the tour, visit the Battlefield Road Audio Tour web page. There are also sign posts at each stop with a QR code that will take you to the audio tour page.
If you want to read all the information on the wayside exhibits and hike the trails at stops 3, 4, and 10, plan to spend about six hours. Without the hikes, yet still getting out of your car to walk to the exhibit areas at each stop, it is possible to do the Saratoga Battlefield Tour in as little as two and a half hours.
National Park Planner has created a virtual Saratoga Battlefield Tour, complete with plenty of photos of what you will see at each stop. Feel free to use this as another source of information as you drive around the battlefield. At the bottom of each web page is a navigation menu that allows you to jump to the next or previous stop.
