There are 99 properties around the Washington, D. C., area that are part of Rock Creek Park. These include natural areas with a few hiking trails, landscaped city parks, sites of Civil War earthen forts, and memorials and statues. With a few exceptions, these parks have very limited appeal to tourists and are used mainly by local residents.
The following is a list of the major sub units of Rock Creek Park:
Francis Scott Key Memorial Park
Civil War Defenses of Washington
The Civil War Defenses of Washington, part of the National Park System, preserves the sites of eighteen earthen forts and one National Cemetery. I visited these sites looking for the forts only, though a few are actually located in a park that offers picnicking, ball fields, and even concerts. The following forts fall under the management of Rock Creek Park.
Battery Kemble and Palisades Park
Battleground National Cemetery
With a few exceptions, use of any photograph on the National Park Planner website requires a paid Royalty Free Editorial Use License or Commercial Use License. See the Photo Usage page for details.
