HISTORY

Fort Bayard was built to protect River Road. When manned, it held four 20-pounder Parrott guns and two 12-pounder Howitzers (pounder refers to the weight of the cannonball that could be fired). The fort is named for Brigadier General George D. Bayard, who was killed at Fredricksburg in December 1862.
