Rock Creek Park | CARTER BARON AMPHITHEATER

Built in 1950, the Carter Baron Amphitheater is an open-air theater with a seating capacity of approximately 4,000. Most of the performances are music oriented, but films are also shown. It is located at 4850 Colorado Avenue NW and is in the same complex as the Rock Creek Tennis Center and Picnic Areas #23 and #24.

Carter Baron Amphitheater is closed for repairs. According to the National Park Service website, while the theater seating area was renovated in 2004, nothing was done to the stage at that time, and it is the stage that is now in need of repair. There are three options for the renovation, with the quick fix option taking a year to complete and the doing-it-right option taking five years. Let me repeat that. Fixing the stage properly will take FIVE YEARS! To put that into perspective, a skyscraper can be built in three years. Now, either something is out of whack with the NPS’s information or federal bureaucracy is much worse than anyone thought. Or maybe that includes time to raise the half million plus dollars needed for the repair. Anyway, the NPS is leaning towards doing things right, so don’t expect the theater to open any time soon.
