Ragged Island is one of four small islands in Hingham Harbor, the others being Button, Sarah, and Langlee. While there is nothing on it but some trees, it is close enough to the mainland to make a good target for those who want to take a paddling trip. Most of the shore is rocky with steep ledges, but there are decent landing spots on the northeast end. Depending on from where you depart, a round trip to all four islands is as short as two miles.
Of all the islands in Hingham Harbor, Ragged was the most developed. In the late 1800s it was a summer resort with a restaurant and observation shelters. Supposedly you can find evidence of these structures, though I have no idea where to look. The island is full of poison ivy and briers, so wear long pants and explore the inland area with caution.
Ragged Island is not serviced by the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area public ferry.
