Arriving by ferry to Georges Island, part of Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area

Georges Island is the second most popular destination in Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area (Spectacle Island is the most popular). From mid-May through Columbus Day the island is serviced by a direct ferry from Long Wharf North in downtown Boston. Get the latest schedule and ticket prices on the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park web page.

Private boaters are allowed to unload passengers and gear using the island dock but must anchor offshore. Moorings (21 of them) are available and can be reserved in advance for a fee. See the Dockwa reservation web page. Moorings are only available during the standard tourist season of mid-May through Columbus Day. You can also anchor off shore for free, but at your own risk. Boat captains who wish to come ashore after anchoring will need their own dinghy or other hand-paddled watercraft.

The main attraction at Georges Island is Fort Warren, a massive 19th century masonry fort. In fact, if you aren’t interested in touring the fort, there’s really no reason to come at all. Other visitor attractions include a Fort Warren museum, military batteries, and picnic areas. There is no swimming due to strong currents, and to the best of my knowledge, this is the only ferry-serviced island within Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area with a No Swimming policy.
