The Quarry Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway actually overlooks an operational dolomite quarry owned by the Boxley Materials Company. This was the fourth of the company’s many quarries, opening in 1917. Boxley quarries provide materials to support the products it makes, such as bricks, asphalt, and concrete. Dolomite is an ingredient in these products. While this overlook certainly wouldn’t qualify as “scenic,” it is a change from the typical mountains and valley vistas, and it does offer an excellent view of the quarry.
