If traveling south from Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway, by the time you reach the N&W Railroad Overlook you will have descended from the mountains and into the valley. The Parkway passes private houses and farms, and if you look closely from the overlook, you can see the tracks for the Norfolk & Western Railway, which since a merger with Southern Railway in 1982 is known as Norfolk Southern. The overlook was created and named long before the merger, and thus it goes by the original railway name.
There is one gap in the trees where you can see a rural community at the foothill of a small mountain. Other than that one gap, the entire overlook is overgrown with trees.
