Since the beginning of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, the road has been running along what is known as the Great Valley. Here at the Great Valley Overlook, the valley is confined between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Allegheny Mountains to the west. Both ranges are subsets of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain that runs from Georgia to Maine.

The view at the Great Valley Overlook is an expansive 180° vista. The overlook faces westward, so photos are best taken in the morning or early afternoon (unless you come for the sunset).
