Grant’s Headquarters Area is reached by a short detour road, Grant Avenue, between Tour Stop 5 (Stockade Redan Attack) and Tour Stop 6 (Thayer’s Approach) on the tour of Vicksburg National Military Park. Grant Avenue runs to the site of Grant’s Headquarters and the state memorials for Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Kansas, and New York. The short Sherman Circle branches off of Grant Avenue and leads to a tribute to General Sherman. In addition, the modern African-American Memorial is along this road. To get out and take photos of all the monuments adds about 20-30 minutes to the battlefield tour.
Grant’s headquarters was in a home near the current Pennsylvania Memorial. Lore has it that Grant was awoken one night by troops dismantling the house, unaware that he was inside. Turns out they were taking the planks to use them in the Stockade Redan Attack the next day.
