The Kansas Memorial was erected at Vicksburg National Military Park in 1960. Designed like a contemporary work of art, the bottom circle—an unbroken circle—represents the United States before the Civil War. The broken center circle represents the state of affairs during the war. The unbroken circle at the top represents the unified United States after the war.
