The Yockanookany stop on the Natchez Trace Parkway is the northern trailhead for the Yockanookany segment of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail. Unfortunately, this trail is no longer maintained from here to Highway 43, which makes up 16 of the 25 miles of the trail. The National Park Service has even posted a Proceed At Your Own Risk sign at the trailhead.
I hiked a section of Yockanookany back in 2015, and it was a miserable experience. Upon doing some research in late 2021, I found quite a few positive reviews, but all were referring to the southern part of the trail from the West Florida Boundary (southern trailhead) to Highway 43. The section I hiked was at Mile Post 122, north of 43. Also worth nothing is that horseback riding is no longer allowed on any part of the Yockanookany segment.
As advertised on the sign near the Natchez Trace Parkway, there is a picnic table at Yockanookany.
