Cole Creek Loop Trail at Mile Post 176 on the Natchez Trace Parkway

A .2-mile loop trail near Mile Post 176 on the Natchez Trace Parkway leads down to and around a swampy section near Cole Creek where you will find tupelo and bald cypress trees. This is a dying swamp, one that is filling in with sediment every time Cole Creek overflows and washes into the isolated swamp area. As this wet area fills in, a traditional forest will take its place.

Tupelo and cypress trees are distinguishable from each other by the base of their trunks. Tupelos have a smooth, wide base like bellbottom pants. Cypress bases are roughened with ridges, plus you will find tubular roots called cypress knees growing up and out of the water surrounding them.

The Cole Creek Nature Trail is a worthwhile hike for those who did not grow up near a swamp. The sight of the water-loving trees offers something different from a traditional hardwood and pine forest. Information panels are located along the trail to tell you about the trees and their environment. The trail is flat and easy to hike and should take less than ten minutes of your time.
