A small picnic area along the James River with seven tables and six grills is located in a field below the James River Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a steep, downhill walk to the tables, so you must really want to have a picnic if you are willing to lug all of your supplies to the river.
The James River Picnic Area is open sunrise to sunset year-round. All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis, so if you plan a group outing, arrive early. No permit is required for group picnics, but you do not have exclusive use of the picnic area.
