Potomac River above the Great Falls

Potomac River above the Great Falls

Line fishing is allowed—no net fishing—within Great Falls Park on the Potomac River. Those over the age of sixteen must have either a Virginia or Maryland fishing license. No special license or permit is required from the National Park Service. State fishing regulations apply.

Access to the river for fishing purposes is above the falls along the upper end of the North River Trail and Potowmack Canal Trail. There are access points below the falls, but these are only for launching kayaks and other whitewater boats.

All fishing must be done from the shore. It is illegal to wade into the river anywhere within Great Falls Park. If you do so, at best you may end up with a fine, and at worse you may end up dead.
