Just a half mile south of the Haulover Day Use Area, Hatteras Island narrows into a thin stretch of land where the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean are just a short walk from the Outer Banks Scenic Byway. There is a decent size beach area on the Sound, and while beachgoers are welcome, the area is now dominated by kiteboarders. Kite Point does have its own parking lot, but there are no facilities of any kind here. If you are looking to sunbathe and swim in the calm waters of the Pamlico Sound, I recommend the Salvo Day Use Area farther north or the Sand Bay Day Use Area west of Frisco.
