FRONTCOUNTRY CAMPGROUNDS
There are ten frontcountry campgrounds within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These are organized campgrounds with modern conveniences. All accommodate tent campers, and most can accommodate RVs, though there are no electric or water hookups at any of the campgrounds in the park. In addition, seven campgrounds have group campsites for groups of at least seven and up to thirty people. See the Frontcountry Campground web page for a list of campgrounds and details on each.
A few frontcounty campgrounds have sections for those with horses and other pack animals. For more information about horse camps, see the Horseback Riding web page here on National Park Planner.
BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING
Backcountry camping is primitive camping in the wilderness area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are no facilities at the campsites, not even toilets. Backcountry camping is permitted for hikers, horseback riders, and boaters (motorized or paddled). There are nearly 100 designated campsites and 15 shelters (no tent required), though some are for hikers only, hikers and horseback riders only, and boaters only. See the Backcountry Camping web page for complete details and a campsite location map.
