The Stone Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway shows its age. An information panels directs you to view the “massive grey rock before you” and displays a photo of a bald mountain. Back when the Parkway was built, most of the area had been logged. Today, all of the mountains in the vista—and there are many—are covered in trees. There is a bald spot on one mountain, so I’m guessing this is Stone Mountain, though it is the least impressive of the mountains in the view.
Stone Mountain is now part of Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina. It has a campground, so if you find yourself too far from the Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds when night is approaching, give this one a shot. For trivia purposes, there is also a Stone Mountain Park in Georgia near Atlanta.
