At one point in time the Afton Overlook offered a view of the town of Afton 800 feet below, but today the view is largely blocked by trees. Some of the mountains can still be seen, but it is the rural communities in the valley that make the vista interesting. It’s a shame that the very first overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a bust, but overgrown overlooks are a common problem, so get used to it. Fortunately the Rockfish Valley overlook just a mile or so to the south offers a fantastic look at the mountains and valley. I don’t know if it’s a view of Afton, but it sure is similar.
