Appomattox Court House National Historical Park | THE REAR GUARD

APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE BATTLEFIELD TOUR

STOP 1: THE REAR GUARD

Allow 5 minutes for a visit

The first stop on the tour of Appomattox Court House Battlefield is where Confederate general James Longstreet’s men dug trenches to protect the rear of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. If you look carefully, you can see remnants of the trenches. Other than that, there are two wayside exhibits about the war.

This stop on the tour is outside the boundary of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. It is located across the street from New Hope Baptist Church at 6277 Old Courthouse Road, Appomattox, Virginia. This is about four miles north of the Appomattox Court House village.
