The town of Appomattox Court House is the main attraction at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, for after all, this is where Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union general Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, the first major step in ending the Civil War. But what most people don’t know is that a battle took place in the area that morning.
The National Park Service has set up a driving tour of the battlefield. There are seven stops on the tour, five of which are within the park boundary. These stops are quite far apart, so visiting them for most people will require driving.
In addition to wayside exhibits and other information, there are hiking trails at some of the tour stops.
The following web pages contain information about each stop on the tour. A menu at the bottom of each page allows you to jump to the next or previous stop.
Stop 1: The Rear Guard
Stop 2: Lee’s Headquarters
Stop 3: The Appomattox River
Stop 4: Confederate Cemetery
Stop 5: North Carolina Monument
Stop 6: Grant’s Headquarters
Stop 7: Battle of Appomattox Station
