The main picnic area at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is located next to the parking lot for the historical village. There are two tables on the sidewalk for those with mobility problems. The rest are on a grassy field slightly below the parking lot, so you must walk down a hill to get to them. There are some shade trees on the field, and if a table is not in the shade, feel free to pick it up and move it. In all, there are a half dozen picnic tables, but no grills. Picnicking is limited to this area of the town site.
Picnic tables at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park that are accessible to those with mobility problems
All tables are taken of a first come, first served basis, so if you want to host a group event, you must show up early and secure the tables. Depending on your group size, you may also be required to obtain a permit. For more information, see the National Park Service’s official Permits and Reservations web page for the park.
There are also picnic tables along Highway 24 at the bridge over the Appomattox River. This is a nice place to have a picnic if you only require a single table. There is one table on both sides of the river and on both sides of the road—four in all. Parking lots are located both north and south of the river, about 75 yards away.
