APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE BATTLEFIELD TOUR
STOP 5: NORTH CAROLINA MONUMENT
Allow 20 minutes for a visit
The fifth stop on the Appomattox Court House Battlefield Tour is at the North Carolina Monument, the only battlefield monument within Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (there are a few others, but not within the park boundary). It is located where General William Cox’s North Carolina Brigade fired the last organized volley of the battle. To see it requires a .4-mile round trip walk from the parking lot on level terrain. The large monument you can see from the parking lot is the Raine Family Monument, not the North Carolina Monument.
The North Carolina Monument was dedicated on April 10, 1905. The event was attended by the governors of North Carolina and Virginia, as well as North Carolina veterans who fought and surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
The monument is on the Grant’s Approach Trail, a 1.5-mile loop trail. To get to it, take the trailhead on the right side of the parking lot on the segment of trail that leads into the forest.
