STOP 2: LEE’S HEADQUARTERS

Allow 30 minutes for a visit that includes a short hike to the headquarters site

The second stop on a tour of the Appomattox Court House Battlefield is at Confederate general Robert E. Lee’s headquarters. Lee arrived just outside of Appomattox Court House on April 8, 1865, and made what would be his last headquarters of the Civil War. After a short battle the following day, he surrendered to Union general Ulysses S. Grant that afternoon. There is a wayside exhibit about Lee’s final days in the war and a short audio program about his farewell speech to his men (if it is working).

Lee’s actual headquarters is not at the tour stop parking lot but about a tenth of a mile into the forest. A quarter-mile loop trail that starts just behind the exhibit leads to the spot. All there is at the headquarters site is a tablet that marks the location, so you aren’t missing much if you skip the short walk. See the Lee’s Headquarters Trail report here on National Park Planner for information on this trail.

The Tobacco Prizery Nature Trail also starts at the Lee’s Headquarters stop on the battlefield tour.
