CAMPING SEASON
The Smokemont Group Campground in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open seasonally despite being located within the main Smokemont Campground, which is open year-round. It is typically open from May through October. The exact opening and closing dates change each year, so be sure to visit the National Park Service’s Group Campgrounds web page for the latest schedule.
TYPE OF CAMPING
Smokemont Group Campground is for tent campers only.
NUMBER OF SITES
The group campground has three campsites that can accommodate up to 20 people each (you need a minimum of seven people to camp at a group site). There is also parking for five vehicles at each site. The group campsites are located next to the D section of the main Smokemont Campground.
Campsites G1 and G2 have four picnic tables, two lantern posts, a grill / fire ring, and five 13′ x 13′ tent pads. Each pad should be able to fit two small or one large tent. All tents must be pitched on the pads.
Campsite G3 is handicap accessible. Like the other sites it has picnic tables, lantern posts, and tent pads. However, it has a taller grill / fire pit, which is good for cooking if you are in a wheelchair, but it sucks for sitting around a campfire because the fire is down at the bottom of the metal container. The campsite also has a paved path to the restroom building.
AMENITIES
Like all campgrounds in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there are no showers at Smokemont, but there are private companies that offer fee-based shower facilities outside of the park. Ask the campground host for directions to the closest one. The campground does have modern restrooms with cold water.
There are no water or electricity hook-ups at the group campsites.
Ice, vending machine snacks, and firewood are sold at the Smokemont Riding Stables, which is located just outside the campground.
