FORT MONROE WALKING TOUR
STOP 7: BATTERY GATEWOOD
Battery Gatewood is a concrete battery that was constructed during the Endicott era of fort upgrades in the 1890s. Gatewood held four British Armstrong rapid fire guns and is the only battery inside the fort walls. Climb up the hill to get to it. You can see the next stop from here.

Note: The rest of the tour stops are outside the fort walls and none of them, other than the Water Battery (next tour stop), are part of the National Park—most have nothing to do with the fort at all. If you don’t want to continue the walk outside, which accounts for at least half, if not more, of the 3-mile tour, view the Water Battery from Battery Gatewood and then return back to your car.
