FORT MONROE WALKING TOUR
STOP 11: ENGINEER WHARF
The original wharf at Fort Monroe was built in 1818. This is where construction materials for the fort were unloaded. It is also where Jefferson Davis landed when he was imprisoned at the fort after the Civil War.
Today’s pier is used for fishing, and it is the only authorized fishing location within Fort Monroe National Monument. A Virginia Saltwater Fishing License is required. A license can be purchased online at the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The pier is open daily from dawn to dusk.
Continue down the street to the next stop on the walking tour.
Next Stop: The Chamberlain Hotel | Previous Stop: Old Point Comfort Lighthouse
