FORT MONROE WALKING TOUR
STOP 2: ROBERT E. LEE’S QUARTERS
When you exit the Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe National Monument you will see a number of elegant houses in front of you. A historical marker points out the one that Robert E. Lee once occupied. It’s hard to see because of all the trees that now surround it. Lee graduated from West Point as an engineer, and at the age of 24 he was stationed at Fort Monroe to direct many of the projects during the final stages of the fort’s construction. He lived here from 1831 to 1834. Today, many of the houses within the fort are apartments for rent, including Lee’s Quarters, so the building is not open to the public.
Continue down the street with the museum on your right to get to the next stop on the walking tour.
