There is one picnic area at Petersburg National Battlefield, and that is in the Eastern Front Unit just past Confederate Battery 9. There are also some picnic tables at the Five Forks Battlefield Visitor Contact Station.
All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved, so Petersburg National Battlefield is not an ideal place to hold a group event. Also, any gathering of 25 or more people requires a permit, and this is only for the gathering, not for reserving the tables. You still have to show up first thing in the morning and stake your claim before anyone else arrives. Information on obtaining a permit is available at the National Park Service’s official Special Use Permit Information web page for the park.
