A picnic area in the Eastern Front Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield is located just past the third stop on the Eastern Front Driving Tour, Confederate Battery 9. The picnic area has its own parking lot, and the tables are just 25 to 50 feet away. This is a forested lot with nine tables made from recycled plastic, so no splinters from dilapidated wooden tables to worry about. There are no grills, but picnickers are allowed to bring their own gas grill—no charcoal or wood burning grills are allowed.
All tables are taken on a first come, first served basis, so this isn’t an ideal place to hold a group event. Also, any gathering of 25 or more people requires a permit, and this is only for the gathering, not for reserving the tables. You still have to show up first thing in the morning and stake your claim before anyone else arrives. For information on obtaining a permit, see the National Park Service’s official Special Use Permit Information web page for Petersburg National Battlefield.
There is also a fancy outhouse at the picnic area. This is what Jed Clampett would call a “portable toilet” in a permanent building.
