FORT MONROE WALKING TOUR

STOP 5: LINCOLN GUN

The Lincoln Gun is located on the Parade Grounds of Fort Monroe, which is a “courtyard” to the layman. To get there, take the road to the right of the Chapel of the Centurion. The Lincoln Gun is the very first 15-inch Rodman gun ever made. It could fire a 300-pound projectile four miles. The gun was cast in 1860 but named for President Lincoln in 1862. It was used during the Civil War, so it is not simply a ceremonial gun cast with the purpose of honoring Lincoln (he wasn’t even president in 1860).

When done, walk back the way you came and take a left on the main street to get to the next stop on the walking tour.
