Meeks Stable at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park

The Meeks Stable at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park was built around 1850 by John H. Plunkett at the same time he built the nearby general store and storage shed. Francis Meeks purchased the barn (as well as the store) in the early 1860s, and it was he who owned the buildings on April 9, 1865. The barn was first restored in 1949 by the National Park Service.

Within sight distance to the west of the barn is a lone tree with a fence around it. This is where Lafayette Meeks, the son of Francis, is buried. Lafayette died of typhoid fever on October 4, 1861, while with the 2nd Virginia Cavalry regiment. He never saw battle.
