Appomattox County Jail at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park
Construction on the Appomattox County Jail, known as the New County Jail, began in 1860 but was not completed until after the Civil War in 1870, making it one of the only post-war buildings at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. The previous jail, which burned down in 1864, was located on the other side of the street.
The jail served as the county jail until 1892 when the county seat was moved from Appomattox Court House to Appomattox Station. Afterwards it was used as a polling station until becoming part of the park in 1940. It was first restored in 1959.
The jail is open to the public. Rooms are decorated with period reproduction furniture.
