George Washington “Carter” Shields cabin in the Cades Cove region of Great Smoky Mountains National Park
See the Cades Cove Region web page for an interactive location map.
The only building on George Washington “Carter” Shields’ property in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the cabin he lived in when he purchased the land back in 1910. The cabin was already there, and it is thought to have been built in the 1830s. Shields moved away in the early 1920s. I am not sure who built the original cabin and owned the property, but there were Shieldses in Cades Cove since the 1820s, so it may well have been built by one of Carter’s relatives. Like all buildings at Cades Cove, the cabin is open to the public, but there is nothing inside.
