A large picnic area at Miller Field can be reserved for hosting events for up to 150 people. It is the only picnic area in the Staten Island Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area that can be reserved, and it is only open spring through fall. If interested, call the Miller Field Ranger Station at (718) 351-6970. There is a fee involved.
While permits are required to use the picnic area, I seriously doubt Rangers are going to run off individuals, families, or a few friends who sit down for a bite to eat when at Miller Field as long as the picnic area is not being used for an event. However, you may get kicked out if you start using the grills and it looks like you are having a planned outing, regardless of how few people are in your group. If that’s your situation, call the Ranger Station and ask if a permit is needed.
Tables at Miller Field are located in a grass field and are arranged in 22 rows made up of two extra-long tables each. One of these tables is equal to two standard picnic tables. Each row has its own grill. The parking area is next to the picnic area, so you must carry your picnic supplies anywhere from 50 to 200 yards. Restrooms are located at the nearby Miller Field Ranger Station.
There are two paved areas with tables and grills that are accessible to those in wheelchairs. Both are located right next to the sidewalk that leads from the parking area.
