Miller Field is part of Gateway National Recreation Area’s Staten Island Unit. The property that would become Miller Field was a farm owned by the wealthy Vanderbilt Family since 1836. After passing through a succession of heirs, including George Vanderbilt, the builder of the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina, the property was sold to the United States government in 1919. Within two years the former farming estate was transformed into a military airfield that had a seaplane ramp, two grass runways, troop housing, two standard aircraft hangars, and two seaplane hangars. The seaplane hangars, collectively known as Hangar 38, still stand today. Miller Field remained in operation until it was decommissioned in 1969. It became part of the Staten Island Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area in 1972.
The “field” in Miller Field still applies, but no longer as an airfield. Today it is a large sports facility, with dozens of soccer, baseball, and softball fields. There’s even a cricket field. These are available for organized league sports or for a one day outing, such as a company picnic and softball game. Permits are required for organized leagues and groups to use the fields. Call (718) 351-6970 for more information. No permits are required to use the children’s playground or the basketball courts as long as they are not being used for organized league play or reserved for group outings.
The grounds of Miller field are open daily from April through October between the hours of 6 AM and 9 PM, and from 6 AM to 8 PM the rest of the year.
