State Memorials Master Index

The second most impressive memorial at Vicksburg National Military Park is the Wisconsin State Memorial. The 122-foot column has a bronzed eagle at the top, the mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry named “Old Abe.” Bronze tablets adorn the four sides of the base and contain the names of all Wisconsin men who fought at Vicksburg. Two sculptures by Julius Loester stand on either side of the staircase. The memorial was dedicated in May 1911.
