West Virginia State Memorial at Vicksburg National Military Park

State Memorials Master Index

A few state memorials at Vicksburg National Military Park are less than impressive, and the West Virginia Memorial is certainly one of them. It is dedicated to the 4th West Virginia Infantry, the only West Virginia unit in the battle, and features a bust of Major Arza M. Goodspeed, the regiment’s commander. Goodspeed died during the fighting on May 19, 1863. The memorial was dedicated on November 14, 1922.
