The Texas State Memorial is the first state memorial that you will come to on the southern loop of the Battlefield Tour road of Vicksburg National Military Park. It is located next to the Railroad Redoubt stop because it was here that Union forces briefly took control of the Confederate fort, only to be forced out by Texas reinforcements later that same day. Constructed of red granite, an eleven step staircase symbolizes the eleven sister states of the Confederacy. A yucca plant sits at the base of a Texas infantryman and cannon. The memorial was dedicated in November 1961.
