Note: Saugus Iron Works is a modern name. When in operation, the iron plant was called Hammersmith, and it was located in Lynn, Massachusetts. The town of Saugus was not incorporated until 1815.
No blacksmith shop was included when the First Iron Works Association built the reproduction of the Saugus Iron Works Industrial Site in the early 1950s, yet there were multiple blacksmith shops when Hammersmith was in operation from 1646 until the late 1660s. Some were owned by the company itself and used to make products for repairs and new construction, while others were set up by independent blacksmiths who rented space on the property and purchased wrought iron to make nails, tools, and other iron products that they would later sell.
The current blacksmith shop at Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site was built by the National Park Service in 1975. Stop by on select days to see nail making and other types of blacksmithing demonstrations. The blacksmith also makes products that are used for repairing the equipment at the park. Check the National Park Service’s official Calendar web page to see if any demonstrations will be held when you visit.
