The Houchin Ferry Canoe Launch in Mammoth Cave National Park is for hand-launched watercraft only. The ramp is blocked off to prevent vehicles with trailers from getting to the water. It is the last canoe launch within the park and thus is typically used as an exit point. Any trips originating from here will take paddlers outside the park boundary, which is 2.5 river miles away.
The ramp down to the water is very steep, and it is made more treacherous by loose gravel. I went slipping and sliding all the way to the bottom just to take photos, so I’d hate to be carrying a canoe or kayak. It’s like walking down a hill covered with marbles.
