MILITARY FORTS AND BATTERIES

The Florida unit of Gulf Islands National Seashore has the largest collection of 19th century forts and batteries open to the public of any National Park on the east coast. An additional fort, Fort Massachusetts, is part of the Mississippi unit of the park and it is open as well. Located on Ship Island, a visit requires a ferry trip or a voyage in your own boat.
