Assateague Island National Seashore is a barrier island located off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula with sections in both Maryland and Virginia. The seashore offers outdoor activities such as swimming and sunbathing, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, surf sports, and kayaking and canoeing. The park is also home to a herd of wild horses that can be seen in both sections, though more frequently in the Maryland district.
Visitors to Assateague Island can spend as little or as much time as they like engaging in their favorite outdoor activities. There is plenty to see and do in both sections of the park. The main difference between the two sections is that camping is allowed in Maryland and not in Virginia. Furthermore, most of the land in Virginia is part of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and not the National Seashore. However, aside from camping, all other activities are available in both sections.
