Beach at the southern end of the Virginia unit of Assateague Island National Seashore

The Virginia section of Assateague Island National Seashore is comprised of the Toms Cove Visitor Center at the southern end of the island and the beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the island in Virginia falls under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which manages the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. National Park Planner has included reviews of the trails in the Refuge but not much on other activities. If you can’t find what you are looking for on National Park Planner, I suggest going directly to the Refuge’s web page.

Unlike the beaches in the Maryland section of the park—which are always open (though services close)—the Virginia section closes and everyone must be out of by a certain time. Current posted hours are:

  • November through mid-March:  6 AM to 6 PM
  • Mid-March through April:  6 AM to 8 PM
  • May through September:  5 AM to 10 PM
  • October:  6 AM to 8 PM

Before making travel plans, always check Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge’s Visit Us web page for the most up-to-date schedule.
