Tour Stop 39: Mess Hall

Building Numbers 55-58
Construction Date: 1905

The original Enlisted Men’s Barracks at Fort Hancock (Buildings 22-25) were built with mess halls inside. However, to free up more space for sleeping quarters, separate mess halls were built behind each barracks in 1905. While Fort Hancock closed in 1974, the Mess Hall Buildings 55, 56, and 57, plus Barracks 24 and 25, remained in use as a U. S. Army Reserve training center until 1981.

Building 58 on the corner of McGruder and Hudson roads has been renovated and is now used as a National Park Service office. Building 56 is used by the Marine Academy of Science as a storage facility. The other two mess hall buildings have not been renovated.

The Mess Hall is the last stop on the Fort Hancock Walking Tour.
