Duplex used for officer housing at Fort Hancock in the Sandy Hook unit of Gateway National Recreation Area
FORT HANCOCK WALKING TOUR
Tour Stop 29: Officers’ Duplex
Building Number 21
Construction Date: late 1930s
If you walk down the Fort Hancock Officers’ Row on Hartshorne Drive, you will pass nineteen buildings once used for officer housing. All but one look relatively the same. This oddball is a duplex that was built nearly forty years after the rest of the houses. The reason is because a lighthouse stood on this spot until the 1930s. When it was torn down, the empty space was used to build the duplex that stands today.
The Officers’ Duplex has been renovated and is now available as a vacation property with daily, weekly, and monthly rental options available. See the Sandy Hook Rentals web page for details.
