FORT HANCOCK WALKING TOUR
Tour Stop 5: YMCA Building
Building Number 40
Construction Date: 1901-03
The YMCA at Fort Hancock was used as a place for recreation. Inside was a refreshment stand, a game room, and a reading room. Guest rooms on the upper floor were for visiting families of the soldiers.
When facing the front of the house, a gymnasium was originally built onto the right side. This was torn down in 1941 and a handball court was put in its place. A new gym was built onto the left side of the main building and still stands today.

The National Park Service is currently offering many buildings at Fort Hancock for lease provided the lessees renovate the buildings back to their historical specifications as much as possible. As of 2025, an investor has signed a lease and plans to turn the YMCA building into a restaurant and bar.
