Dedicated in 1973, the Mississippi State Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park is located at the Pitzer Woods stop on the Gettysburg Battlefield Tour. It was sculpted by Donald DeLue, the same artist who did the nearby Louisiana State Memorial and the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument located at the Warfield Ridge stop on the battlefield tour (Stop 7). The monument features a bronze sculpture of a fallen color bearer while a comrade steps in to defend him. However, it looks to me as if the guy is about to whack the hell out of the guy on the ground. Notice the Conan-the-Barbarian feet, one of which has busted out of its shoe. This was DeLue’s trademark, and you’ll see the same large hands and feet on the Louisiana monument.
The monument was placed where Brigadier General William Barksdale’s Mississippi Brigade began its charge towards the Peach Orchard on July 2, 1863. Barksdale was shot during the battle and died later that night.
