The Louisiana State Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park is located at the Pitzer Woods stop on the Gettysburg Battlefield Tour. It was sculptured by Donald DeLue and was dedicated in 1971 (DeLue also sculpted the Mississippi State Memorial and the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument). At the base, lying on a block of granite, is a bronze figure of a wounded gunner of the New Orleans Washington Artillery holding the Confederate flag. Notice the Conan-the-Barbarian hands and feet, one of which has busted out of its shoe. This was DeLue’s trademark, and you’ll see the same large hands and feet on the Mississippi monument.

Soaring above the wounded soldier is Saint Barbara. Due to her association with lightening, she became the patron saint of artillerymen and others who work with explosives—yes, there is a saint for just about anything. Saint Barbara is blowing a trumpet and holding a flaming cannonball.
