THE FRAGMENTED ATTACK

There is nothing at Stop 2 on the Guilford Courthouse Battlefield Tour other than a wayside exhibit. This spot marks the general location of the American Left Flank that got lost when trying to retreat back to the American second line (another line of untrained militiamen). The left flank was comprised of cavalry and infantry led by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Lee. As a result, the British forces split as well, sending a large number of soldiers after Lee and his men. This was not in the plans for either side. The confusion was caused by the thick, forested land, which was exactly as it is today.

On the way to Stop 2 is the Arthur Forbis Monument. Unfortunately, there is no place to park if you want to see it. Forbis was a militia commander who was killed in the battle. This was Guilford Courthouse National Military Park’s very first monument.
